This may sound somewhat sappy, but when we started George and Ivy in 2018, we didn’t do it for awards — we did it for ourselves. We wanted to create an environment that felt enjoyable to exist in, and that represented who we were as people. Heartfelt, you could say. A place surrounded by good people and where good people’s talent is nurtured, a close community of customers, an inspiring, relaxing and designed space — a safe space — with positive vibes and an unbeatable Spotify playlist. 

So, in 2018, we were ready to make the jump and opened George Ivy. And, whether because of patience, or just sheer luck, we’ve been very fortunate. We landed in our dream building (a Brian Klopper), found the perfect location in the back streets of East Fremantle, built a wonderful, close-knit group of people (team and clients), and won a few awards.

Our green policy towards sustainability is made manifest by our building. Brian worked with a signature palette of recycled bricks, limestone, steel girders, sawn timber and old window frames. Because of this, our building is made from 80% recycled materials. It has been built to maintain comfortable temperature all year round, defying Western Australia’s hot summers and cold winters — meaning, our air conditioner has become an ornament.

We wanted to continue this sentiment and allow it to not only inspire the design and furnishing of the salon, but as stated above, to act as a sort of physical statement of our own actions and intentions. Everything we do is about reducing our footprint and reusing what we have in a highly stylised, highly efficient way — even down to our name (George and Ivy are our grandparents’ names. Everything has a second life).
